Too busy for Jesus?
Anna August.25.2003
(The day I was going to first publish this, I waited to see if there were any kinds of corrections I needed to make. But that very night at Salt Shaker, Brad presented this same lesson. It was a great encouragement to me as God had been working on my heart about this for a few weeks.)
We all claim that we don't have time to do certain things, but as Brad stated, "We do what is important to us." We let the every day things get in our way of the one-on-one with Jesus.
A well-known biblical example of this is that of Mary and Martha. Jesus was visiting these women in their home, a great honor to anyone! As the women, Martha and Mary had the job of preparing the meal of the evening. Does this sound sinful? Cooking for your guests? No! Martha was doing what she thought was the right thing to do, hard at work in the Kitchen, when she looked out and saw her sister sitting at Jesus' feet. Martha was so agitated she essentially said to Jesus " Jesus... make her help me!" But Jesus simply says that Mary knows what's important, and she's doing the right thing... spending time with HIM.
This is something I really struggle with. I want so badly to do my best in school, and other aspects of my life, that I don't spend time with the one person who matters most. But, Jesus wants us to give it all to him. To "seek first HIS kingdom and HIS righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well."
That IS a struggle, isn't it? It can be hard for us to let life work out for itself as we give our time to Jesus. It is for me, at least. I tend to want to worry about getting the "everyday" done. I constantly have to re-read and re-quote Matthew 6:33-34
But seek first his Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
As you go about your day, try to be conscious of what is important to your walk with the LORD and what isn't. Ask the Holy Spirit to make your heart open and ready to learn what kinds of things you can do with out. It may be that you are pursuing them at the inappropriate time, or that they are detrimental to your spiritual health all together.
Draw close to God, and allow him to draw close to you.
